It probably is.
That's the normal thoughts.
For us to be suspicious of deals which are too good to be true.
And many times people straight-out reject the idea.
They think of many reasons why it's not possible and they don't even try it out. And the conclude that the activity doesn't work and that it's a scam.
I've heard of instances where middle aged adults were suspicious of the bonus interest of banks from all the OCBC or UOB promotions.
Such that they straight-out rejected the idea. "Banks not so good one. Sure got some catch somewhere."
And they don't bother to explore even if their own family member has already tried and obtained the bonus interest.
Of course, it's natural to be skeptical about certain things.
We shouldn't stupidly follow blindly.
BUT bear in mind.
There's a difference between laziness vs being skeptical.
If someone is skeptical, they should go and do independent research to verify whether the deal is good or not.
By simply brushing it off is just lazy. It's not being prudent.
And I see it in many places.
Some of the more obvious places I see this behaviour currently is when the freegan community handles expired food, rescued vegetables and dumpster dived food.
Straight out the most common lazy conclusion is always. "Something must be wrong that's why the food is thrown away."
But how many people actually do research on expiry dates?
What are the AVA guidelines on expiry dates?
Why do vendors throw away vegetables? Is it really cos they are bad? Are there other reasons?
Have these people seen the food available in dumpsters?
Have they seen the actual food which has been picked up and not some dirty picture from their imagination?
And more often than not, people simply reject the idea. It's easier to just continue with daily life than to research and learn more about things.
And I see this in other places.
Many people have ideas about Temasek Holdings, and think that they are losing money. Temasek Holdings actually has audited financial statements published every year.
How many people has read them? How many people knows how to read them?
No. It's easier for people to believe that Temasek is losing money all the time cos it gels with their image of the government.
But yet, we still see so many scams going around online, phone scams, insurance agent scams, etc...
And it makes me wonder...
How people can fall for scams which cost money, but don't explore things that don't cost money...
Well for sure. Both situations come about from the same problem. The reluctance to explore and discover for oneself.
The laziness or cannot be bothered-ness to do some reasonable independent research and exploration.
It's so much easier to just draw conclusions from what someone says, or based on past experiences.
But things are always changing all the time.
Like... Long time ago it was believed that egg yolks caused high cholesterol. But newer information seems to indicate there's less of a cause and effect.
Or people avoid fat and go for low fat, but again newer research indicates sugar causes more trouble than fat.
Now of course that doesn't mean eat all you can.
But rather. To take into account new information and learn from it.
Well the point of today post is simply...
Go do some independent research and don't write off new ideas so fast.
But also be prudent...
And being prudent is to learn and do research.
Laziness is not prudence.
