Finally, the authorities have decided to do SOMETHING about this situation.
Now, the idea is pretty cool. Having bikes all over the place in a safe convenient place where folks can easily pick them up and ride around.
Obviously, things don't work out that way. The only time when I see the bikes in good safe, neatly parked positions is when the company sends out their staff to line them up at the HDB void decks and reallocate all the bikes left all over the place.
More often than not, these bikes are just left everywhere like litter. Parked irresponsibly at the side of the road, on the pavement, left lying down, parked in the middle of nowhere, etc.
So now, these companies have to have allocated parking spaces for the bikes to park so riders have to pick up the bikes from these parking areas, and supposedly have to drop them off at this areas when they finish their ride. YAY! Penalties for not parking them in the preset areas are not yet known, but I hope they will be severe enough to deter people from indiscriminately parking all over the place.
The idea itself of bike sharing is pretty cool. IF everyone is responsible. But that's the thing isn't it? The people who want convenience usually want the convenience up to their doorstep. So they will just ride it to anywhere and park it anywhere. That's why they use this convenience. It becomes inconvenient for them to have to find a nice place to park the bikes. So they end up leaving them anywhere.
I've felt that this bike sharing was a mess a long time ago. I'm sure many other Singaporeans think that way. The bikes are just an eyesore when you see it left lying all over. When I see it, it reminds me of litter. Big pieces of litter. And I think to myself... where's my clean and green Singapore?
Like if they park it in some nice quiet corner and don't disturb me like all the other personal bikes at the usually parked at the bottom of an HDB. That's all cool... But THIS... is not cool...
Anyway, I'm glad the authorities finally did something about it. Hopefully it solves this unsightly problem.
