I haven't dumpster dived in a week or so. So I thought to myself. How about I try to do my 4th dumpster dive. Just a quick one. Just 3 blocks of flats, around 6 big dumpsters and any items left around the lift lobby. This should maybe take only 30-45 minutes.
I wonder how much I could find in a short time frame. I intentionally set a short time frame to see how much I could find with only 3 blocks of flats.
Grass tiles, 10-12 pieces... I couldn't really determine the exact count.
2 fairly usable bags which I selected.
I even gave away a nice Nike bag to an Indian cleaner. I was looking through the trash and pulling out the Nike bag, and he was looking at me, then I smiled at him and he asked if I was throwing the stuff away.
I replied... No. I other people throw. I take. Then I passed him the Nike bag and asked him, you want? And he took it and thanked me for it.
A bag of toy swords, pirate stuff, probably from someone's kids play or D & D...
Anyway these are just the simple stuff, I'll likely do a quick sale of these or gift them to someone.
Then I came across these 2...
A quick research online indicates that the "use by date" on formula milk is important.
This is like medicine or vitamin pills. Formula milk has chemicals and nutritional formulas. As time passes, the chemicals/formulas breakdown and become less effective.
Meaning, potentially, the child gets less nutrition than he's supposed to be getting when fed.
So it's not that the milk has gone bad. Rather, it's just not as nutritional anymore.
Further search online says that some parents are ok to use expired formula milk to supplement their child's diet. As this formula milk is for 2 years old onwards, some parents are already feeding the child proper solid food, thus, they are comfortable with using expired (but not bad) formula milk powder.
Cos supposedly the child is already getting sufficient nutrients from their solid diet.
Anyway, I'm no child expert so I'll keep these 2 tins and ask the freegan community if they want it. Else I'll just dump them again.
(Before I finished this article, someone from the community has already requested for the 2 tins of formula milk.)
Moving on...
Oh this is A BIT more interesting...
That's a braccialini bag... That's an Italian brand.
Expected value if new is US$400, but it's old and 2nd hand.
I expect it to be authentic cos the dumpster looked like a banker was clearing her stuff out. There were bank documents as well... so... now you know how a banker treats your documents.
The sad part is... the bag is in a very very bad condition and had to be disposed of.
Then the bhailiu bag was found along with the braccialini bag...
Looks like this banker likes Italian bags.
Ok this bag is pretty large, the 2 NAN cans are put beside to show the relative size.
This bag is in pretty good condition. Found in a paper bag beside the small green dustbin beside a lift.
Just some threads that are sticking out at some seam edges which I can just snip off.
I like this bag, fairly clean and good condition.
The estimated value is a bit harder to call... depending on size and material, I see the website to be around US$80-US$200.
Obviously it's old so I can't find the exact same design.
But whatever... that's not important.
YAY!!! I finally found my first 2 fairly branded bags. Too bad I only get to keep one of them.
And the final thing I brought back today...
CUBAN CIGARS!!!
They aren't really all that expensive.
Initial research shows me that they cost around US$10-US$15 per stick...
But apparently, those are the US sites.
Once they make it into Singapore and get slapped with all the taxes, cigars could cost something like S$30 per stick.
So maybe S$60 value here... I'm not too sure, I can't find prices online cos Oaks Cellars can't list the cigars online.
Of course the only problem is... I don't smoke... LOL
FYI, cigars are different from cigarettes, in that the smoker doesn't inhale the smoke. So apparently the smoker just plays with and enjoys the smoke flavour in his mouth before puffing it out. Just saying...
Ok so that's all that I picked up...
I didn't bother to pick up a lot of other stuff, like clothes, shoes, golf gloves, golf club covers, all of these other stuff could be easily sold at some recycling outlets, or some other freegans would scold me for "wasting" perfectly usable stuff cos they have avenues to pass it out.
But today's special. I intentionally did a quick run to try to see what kind of value I could obtain from less than 1 hour. So I had to leave a lot of stuff behind.
So once again it's hard to value this stuff...
The grass tiles could be useful for someone who is looking for it. It is pretty expensive. Amazon sells 9 tiles for S$30. But Cash Converters probably won't pay me much for it.
The casual bags have logos, Fitness First and Standard Chartered. They can be used as good bags, but Cash Converters won't buy them at all. I know who to pass them on to.
I gifted the only bag that Cash Converters would buy to the Indian cleaner, but no issues, I hope he's happy with the bag.
The bag of pirate toys could be useful for someone running a kid business. I think I know someone who can make use of it. So I already can pass it on.
The NAN has been arranged to be handed off to another person who can probably make some use of it. Retails at $35 each ($70), but since it's expired...
The Bhailiu bag is pretty nice, for this size, the value should be at least $80.
I'm not saying I can sell this or buy it for $80. Cos I can't buy such a bag at retail for $80, but also neither am I confident to sell this bag for $80. Rather, it's an estimation of perceived value.
The cigars I would value them at $20-$60 for both, once again, it's an estimated perceived value.
I didn't have to do much clean up today, cos I didn't bring much stuff back, so all in all, I think I took around 1.5 hours.
So for someone like me, who doesn't particularly like bags or cigars... I "worked" for 1.5 hours for around $100 value. But the items have no value to me.
But if someone likes cigars and bags, and if this person did what I did, then he/she would have gained $100 worth of value in 1.5 hours. That's a whopping $66 per hour rate of value.
So worth it or not... it's relative to who values what.
That's all for tonight's evening of fun.
It's late 12 midnight. I usually sleep by 9:30-10 pm.
Good night.
