Cos it's wet and miserable and the merchandise are also wet and sloppy...
I went out today and came home around 3pm... I decided to take a walk around the estate, in a more indirect route, on my way to the NTUC to buy groceries *GASP* my first time buying in over a month.
And I was walking behind the Veolia truck, so I thought, "Heck, I wouldn't be picking anything up." Cos they are collecting trash, so I took a more direct route to the NTUC... and I cut through a couple of HDB blocks and I just peeked near the rubbish bins, cos it's quite common to find stuff lying beside the bins for easy picking... I didn't find much as I cut through the blocks...
Then at the last road crossing there it lay... one plastic bag with 2 neatly tied plastic bags inside it... lying on top of the blue bin.
So I went over and tapped on it... hmm... seems hard... pressed it a bit, Oh.... there are buttons, so they are likely electronics, and they are neatly tied up. 2 smaller plastic bags in 1 bigger bag. So I thought, heck it, I'll just take it and unwrap it later. It's clean anyway. Untouched by the rain and just sitting on top of the bin, probably for a short while.
So I picked it up and continued to NTUC to buy my groceries for the week.
1 head of cabbage, under $1.
and 1kg of potatoes, $2.50
This will last me for the week.
Then today's meat is a slice of fish, around $3.
For veges, I find it more efficient to buy, cos that's the quantity that I need for the week, and the transport will cost me around that price anyway.
(This is not an excuse, I don't need an excuse to spend money, I'm not 100% freegan. So I'm not trying to justify it. Rather, IF it made sense for me to go and collect free veges, I would do so. To me, mathematically, it doesn't make sense.)
Whereas meat, I don't know yet, where I can find consistent quantities of fresh meat for free...
I know where to find preserved meats, canned, processed meats, but fresh meats... not yet...
Anyway, back to my find... so I brought it back home and...
So up til now, I have received 2 DVD players from other freegans, and picked up 3 DVD players.
The 2 which I have received were passed on to my family members.
One which I found previously is not working,
and these 2...
One works and one doesn't work...
Oh well, I just found it kinda ironic, cos just earlier today I said that I'll hold off dumpster diving for a while til the weather gets better, or that I don't want stuff so there's no real incentive for me to dumpster dive... but then again, when the opportunity presents itself and it's just lying there for me to take, clean and dry, I just grab it anyway.
Well, some people might say this isn't really dumpster diving, cos I don't open the dumpster, well, there's no real definition of dumpster diving, basically, it started in the US where people really jumped into the dumpster cos the dumpster is pretty big and people needed to get in to dig stuff out.
But for our purposes, as long as the item is a discarded product, and we pick it up, it's considered dumpster diving, cos essentially, we're just picking stuff out of the intended place, (the item was intended to be in the dumpster for disposal).
Oh well, that's it for today, I'm gonna watch Running Man.
