My wife loves mooncakes, and following some form of tradition, we always buy 4 boxes, 2 for her side of the family and 2 boxes for my side of the family.
So every year we spend quite a bomb on mooncakes.
Let's see the stuff which most folks would be buying.
Sheraton, Regent, Ritz Carlton prices are below.
A quick look and we realize that each box averages around $70.
So typically every year we spend $280 and maybe afte 25-30% discount, it ends up at around $190+.
Now that's pretty steep. I mean, it's pretty much for show rather than for our own consumption.
Even Bengawan Solo mooncakes aren't particularly cheap, averaging around $40 per box.
Picture below.
This year, mooncakes seem to have taken a spike upwards, somehow I get the feeling that it's more expensive than usual. So I was telling my wife, hey can we try to keep the expense lower this round.
So she hunted around for mooncakes.
And the best she could find was something like $42 per box after all the discounts. It was at some hotel. Not too bad a deal considering how much the other hotels were charging.
But I was like... No, let's try to do better....
And when we were on one of her business trips, we hit the jackpot...
We were in Malaysia when we chanced upon this restaurant. It's not an unknown brand. It's a group of restaurants. It's like an airconditioned zi char restuarant. The food they serve is pretty good.
We bought 1 mooncake to try. It was around MYR18. All their mooncakes average around MYR18.
That's less than S$6. It was pretty nice. Interesting flavours too.
And we were like. ^_^ Let's bring this home.
So we bought 16 pieces. Around MYR288. The boxes come free.
But wait! There's more. If we use our CIMB card in Malaysia, we get 25% off!!!
(For more than 12 pc purchase, and for selected mooncakes only.)
Woah boomtown!
That's MYR216 after discount. Which is less than S$70 for all 4 boxes.
So we were super happy with this years' mooncake purchase cos we saved quite a bunch...
However... fate was not on our side... So we spent $70 on mooncakes when usually it would have costed us $190+.
But, one of her recent business trips was cancelled and we had already bought my ticket. So we burned away a $75 ticket. It was unfortunate. But I should probably take it as an independent incident.
Just thought you guys might want to know the difference in prices between Malaysia and Singapore.
It's almost daylight robbery here.
You guys may want to consider going across the causeway to get your mooncakes. Definitely worth the trip.
