"Your vote is secret"
What does it mean?
So I was talking with someone and was asking him about his the election and what party he preferred. This was during the General Election. His response was "My vote is secret..."
Ok fine, I understand that many people may want to keep their vote secret, as in they don't want to say who they voted for. And that's fine.
But is this what this phrase really is intended for?
You see, this phrase, "Your vote is secret." Doesn't mean don't share who you voted for.
If you want to discuss it, talk about it, share it, that's fine. That's your choice.
This phrase is intended to mean, your vote is secret from the Government.
There is supposedly no real way for the Government to identify each individual and determine who they voted for.
So in a Democratic society, this is important as the Government should not have anyway to identify who voted for who. And no one should be forcing you to reveal this information.
This is so that voters can vote freely and safely without any fear of individual repercussions.
Ok anyway, just wanted to share this point. Nothing very much to elabourate on.
Edit : Ok I probably wasn't clear what I was trying to say previously.
The point about this is that "Your vote is secret" is that you are allowed to talk about it IF you want to talk about it. And you can choose not to talk about it if you aren't comfortable with it.
This differs from the Secrets Act where you are not supposed to talk about it.
Example, many NS exercise code names, military stuff, etc. Whereby people need clearance to assess it and are bounded by the Secrets Act and should not discuss about it.
So if people are discussing explicitly about who they voted for in the hawker center, it's absolutely fine. Cos I have heard people say, "Eh eh, don't talk about it, cos your vote is secret. You aren't supposed to tell others."
You can tell others and discuss it IF you feel like it.
