Once again, thank you to "Don't_Know" for suggesting this topic...
It's really a coincidence. I never thought anyone would be interested in this.
But I helped a friend remove/dispose a sofa, queen size bed and mattress, and TV console.
So my friend messaged me and asked a similar question. She needed to dispose her stuff cos she was moving, since she says in a condo, she couldn't get Town Council to help her and it would cost her $200 or so just to call someone to dump the items.
She asked me if I had any ideas...
The first suggestion was to sell the items on Carousell.
She said she already tried. Many people were asking questions without any real interest, and she was getting frustrated with stupid questions.
She was on a tight timeline and had one month left to dispose the items and she would be happy to give it away free as long as it disappeared by itself, otherwise she would need to pay someone to remove it, and paying someone is the worst outcome.
During this period, I had just joined the Freegan group. So I posted on the Freegan community page and Whatsapp chats. I hoped that since she was willing to give the items away free, someone would want them. The group was still small and most of them don't have access to transportation so most of them didn't show much interest in the items.
Then one of the Freegans suggested I check out this Facebook page FREE loved FURNITURE (Singapore).
This group has 10k members. I remember when I posted the items for giveaway, within 15 minutes, I received messages about the items. After I redirected the messages and everything, my friend directly corresponded with the people wanting to take the items. Within a couple of days, she told me that she had people ready to take her stuff and within 2 weeks she told me she cleared the items. During one weekend, they came to her place and collected the stuff. Different people took different things, so there is some coordination involved.
Ok so... I don't know who the people who collect the free furniture are.
They could be resellers, or they could be using it for themselves. If there's any concern about that then that's going to be an issue... Basically, by giving it away, it's like incentivizing someone to cover the transportation and effort cost to help remove the item.
But I find this Facebook page my best current solution, cos... well... it worked. And when it worked, I stopped looking for other avenues to push out the furniture.
The other thing about this Facebook page is... if you are looking for free furniture, you can also go and grab them when other people post on this page, but you have to arrange your own transport to pick up the items. Great for people looking for furniture to fill up their flat for rent.
I would think a potential alternative is to talk to the cleaners. Most cleaners have connections with karang guni's or disposal people. Cos the cleaners are the first people to sift through the trash and collect sell able stuff. Yes, all of them do it. They will look through the trash, find stuff that karang guni wants and store them and call the karang guni to collect when it's worth the trip. So I'm quite sure they have ways to help make an item disappear for a fee...
But... it's likely not free. So I'm not sure how much it might cost cos I've never tried it.
Anyway, that's it for this post. Try FREE loved FURNITURE (Singapore) and good luck on your disposal.
Please note, meeting people online could be risky, blah blah blah, please stay safe and take whatever necessary precautions you think are needed.
