Or that in US, things are bigger and cheaper, only problem is that the supermarkets are hard to access.
So today, I made a trip to Walmart and an Asian Supermarket around my area. Less than 10km from where I stay.
There's quite a lot of interesting items, cos there's a lot of stuff which I use in SG, so it's nice that I'll be able to replicate the food I cook in SG.
Ok, so have a look.
Most of the products have a price/lb, which means price per pound.
This is equivalent to around 400gm.
So if you see like beef for instance, US$2.46/lb, this means US$2.46 per 400gm.
US$1 is around S$1.36.
So it's around S$3.35 per 400gm of beef brisket, or S$0.84 per 100gm.
This is super cheap, as compared to SG pricing for beef brisket.
Lay's Chips is US$3.98 per 500gm.
Chicken is really cheap too at US$0.96 per pound after discount.
Or S$1.31 per 400gm
Or S$0.33 per 100gm
My preliminary assessment indicates that I'll have difficulty getting free food here. But maybe I'll be able to find my way around once I get used to things here.
But even if I don't get free food, the cost of food here isn't expected to be too expensive. Unless I plan to eat out often.
So... long story short... yes... some (not ALL) supermarkets are cheap. And they are cheaper than SG significantly. The stories we hear about buying things in bulk from Walmarts... Well... Those stories are pretty true.
I also went to another supermarket called Randalls. This one is more expensive by around 10-20%.
It's something like Giant vs Cold Storage in SG.
I'm really enjoying my time in Houston this trip.
I hope it's not just a first impression thing.
In fact, I'm liking it so much, I don't feel like going back to Paris.
But I'll have to return to pack my stuff and all that... At least I'll have something to look forward to in the coming months.
