But as things are... I always get stuff when I go to Pasir Panjang...
Look... Wonderful papayas and honey dews...
If I served them to you, would you eat it? If they were served in a restaurant, would you eat them?
But you see, the story isn't always so nice...
Even within the Freegan community, we have people who pick and choose fruits and vegetables.
If not nice, they won't take home and hope someone else will take it home, else it gets thrown away.
And usually, the organizers will be the one to pick up all the left over bits cos no one else wants them and we shouldn't throw them away.
And plus, usually, the organizers are the more experienced freegans who know that the outside doesn't entirely reflect what's on the inside.
As you can see... the papayas and the honey dew aren't pretty...
That's the point, that's why we can get them for free.
They look terrible on the outside. I'd admit, if I need to pay money for it, definitely I might as well pay money for a perfect one.
But yet inside, after cutting them all up... they are what they are... just any other papaya or honey dew.
I would estimate the amount I cut off was only around 10% of each fruit. Hardly significant with regards to the whole fruit. And I really chopped off any part that looked suspicious. To me, it's not worth the risk, if it looks strange, I'll chop off the part that doesn't look nice and another centimeter to be sure.
The unsightly parts hardly went deep into the fruit.
Of course, sometimes we might get a bad fruit. Which tastes weird. OBVIOUSLY we aren't supposed to eat them after tasting them. So gotta use brain la duhz.
And that's the thing right?
I could serve these cut fruits to anyone, and they would probably eat it.
And yet, little people would bring this back as an uncut fruit. Even if it was FREE!
That's the point of freegans, we are supposed to be consuming the free and not so pretty stuff so as to reduce wastage. As long as it's not bad, we eat it. It IS sometimes sad to see even within the freegan community MANY are still picky over the stuff they get.
And they only select the good stuff... really, if you want nice pretty fruits and veges, please pay money to go to supermarket to buy.
Freegans are supposed to take stuff that are rejected but still acceptable for consumption.
This post doesn't pin-point anyone in the community, cos there are A LOT of people who wouldn't have taken these fruits home.
