I don't have time to do charity work?
I don't have time to exercise?
I don't have time to play with my children?
I don't have time to travel?
I don't have time to visit my parents?
Seem familiar?
All of the above? Is pure rubbish.
Everyone has time. Everyone has 24 hours a day 7 days a week and most of us have around 80 years of life.
So everyone has more or less the same amount of time, especially on a day to day basis...
The difference is that everyone puts different priorities on different things.
So it's not that one doesn't have time. One CHOOSES to prioritize other things above something else.
If you have time to watch TV for 30 minutes, means you have time to exercise.
If you come back late after work and say you don't have time to play with your kids, it just means you prioritize your work above your time with your kids.
Anything else is just an excuse... "Oh my boss asked me...", this just means your boss is more important than something else.
Now, that's all ok. It's absolutely fine to prioritize other things above other things. That's how we do stuff. It's human. And only you yourself can determine what is more important that something else.
So by all means, I'm not telling you what to do.
But... The thing is, the least you can do, is to be aware of it.
When you don't have time for your kids. Understand that it is YOUR choice that you choose to work.
When you choose not to exercise, cos you want to watch TV for 30 minutes, recognize that you want to watch TV instead of have a run.
Or when someone says they are too tired after work to exercise, this also means the same thing. That this person has placed career as a higher priority than freeing up some time to exercise.
So you see... everyone has time.
It's just that... somethings just aren't important enough.
Something else is more important. Or something else is more fun. I don't really like to exercise, I would choose watching TV any time.
This thought came to me when someone in the freegan group said that she didn't have time to help out with charity... In my mind, that's rubbish. Basically, this person has prioritized everything else before doing charity. But she tells herself that she is so busy that she doesn't have time to do charity...
Now... I don't care. She can choose NOT to do charity. That's not important and that's not the point.
The thing is... it sounds a lot nicer to say,
"I'm really busy and I don't have time to help out with charity."
As compared to...
"Charity is really not as important as... watching TV, going out for movies, etc..."
Everyone is busy... I'm really busy doing nothing at home, and maybe I prioritize that over doing charity.
It's the same for any other thing... Sounds really nice to say...
"Son, I can't play with you cos I have to work and earn money for us to eat."
As compared to...
"Son, there are other jobs to do that will might make less money but will give me more time for you, but I don't want to change jobs so I'm going to stay in this job and that means I don't have time to play with you."
Hey... there's nothing wrong with that... choosing career over family is quite a normal decision that a lot of people do.
If you feel offended about what I'm saying, then I think you need to look at yourself and your excuses.
Of course, there are people in very special situations... that's a different matter.
But for most of us... we all have time. We just choose to do something else which we deem is easier, more fun, more important, whatever...
So if a friend says they don't have time to meet, you're just not important enough as compared to the other things in their life.
Next time you hear those words... or next time you say those words...
Just remember... you have time... you're just choosing to do something else.
